PENETRATING SEALER-PRIMER

PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SECTION INCLUDES
A. Non-pigmented and pigmented sealer-primer for horizontal
and vertical surfaces.
B. Concrete dustproofer.

1.4 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit under provisions of Section 01300.
B. Product Data: Manufacturer's descriptive literature for
sealer-primer; indicate compliance to specified
requirements.
C. Quality Control Submittals:
1. Manufacturer's instructions: Printed installation
instructions for each product, including product
storage requirements.
2. Manufacturer's Safety Data Sheets (M.S.D.S.).
D. Closeout Submittals:
1. Special warranty documents: Issued and executed
jointly and individually by Contractor and installer
of this section.
2. Manufacturer's warranty document: Issued and
executed by manufacturer of sealer-primer.
1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Regulatory Requirements: Products shall comply with
federal, state, and local volatile organic compounds
(VOC) regulations.
B. Mock-Ups: Provide sealer-primer material for mock-ups
specified in affected sections.
NOTE ** Delete the following paragraph if not required.
C. Pre-Installation Meeting:
1. Convene at job site seven (7) calendar days prior to
scheduled beginning of construction activities of
this section to review requirements of this section.
2. Require attendance by representatives of the
following:
a. Sealer-primer manufacturer.
b. Installer of this section.
c. Other entities directly affecting, or affected
by, construction activities of this section.
3. Notify Architect four (4) calendar days in advance of
scheduled meeting date.
1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Store products of this section in manufacturer's unopened
packaging until installation.
B. Maintain storage area conditions for products of this
section in accordance with manufacturer's instructions
until installation.
1.7 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Do not apply sealer-primers to surfaces below 50 degrees
F (10 degrees C) or above 95 degrees F (48 degrees C)
unless recommended by the manufacturer.
B. Do not apply sealer-primer when rain is predicted within
24 hours or less than 1 day after surface has been wet.
C. Do not apply sealer-primer in high or gusty winds.
1.8 WARRANTY
A. Special warranties: Contractor and installer of this
section shall jointly and individually warrant sealer-
primer installation against failure due to incorrect
application for a period of 5 years from the date of
Substantial Completion.
B. Manufacturer's warranty: Manufacturer's limited warranty
against failure of sealer-primer installation due to
failure of sealer-primer material for a period of 5 years
from the date of Substantial Completion.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Acceptable Manufacturer: SEAL-KRETE, Inc.; 306 Gandy
Road, Auburndale, FL 33823- 1527. ASD. Tel: (800) 323-
7357 or (941) 967-1535, Fax: (941) 965-2326.
NOTE ** Delete one of the two following paragraphs;
coordinate with Division 1 requirements.
B. Requests for substitution will be considered in
accordance with provisions of Section 01600.
C. Substitutions: Not permitted.
2.2 MATERIALS
A. Sealer-Primer: SEAL-KRETE Waterproofing Sealer.
1. Characteristics: Clear, non-staining, waterborne
acrylic-base penetrating sealer-primer containing no
VOC's (volatile organic compounds) or petroleum
distillates.
2. Performance requirements:
a. Resistance to water penetration: Minimum rating
of Excellent, when tested according to FS TT-P-
0035, modified using 4 by 8 by 16 inch (100 by
200 by 400 mm) concrete block, at equivalent of
98 mph (158 km/h) wind speed.
NOTE ** Verify actual performance value for the following
with the manufacturer.
3. Resistance to water penetration: No more than
____ dampness appearing on back of wall specimen,
when tested in accordance with ASTM E 514 for 4
hours.
a. Comply with Florida Department of Transportation
Specification 926-16 for Type "O" Compounds,
Florida DOT Method FM5-518.
NOTE ** Verify actual performance value for the following
with the manufacturer.
b. Water vapor transmission: ____ perms (____
metric perms), maximum, when tested in accordance
with ASTM D 1653.
c. Corrosion resistance: No visible degradation of
film after 48 hours, when subjected to sodium
hypochlorite, hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride
(salt), and chlorine.
d. Solids content: 10 percent, minimum.
e. Flammability: Non-flammable.
f. Toxicity: USDA approved for application to
surfaces where there is possibility of contact
with food.
NOTE ** Verify the actual performance values for the
following three properties with the manufacturer.
g. Tensile strength: ___ psi (___ kPa), when tested
in accordance with _____.
h. Freeze/thaw stability: ____, when tested in
accordance with _____.
i. Mechanical stability: _____, when tested in
accordance with _____.
NOTE ** If fading resistance or light stability is
important, verify method of test with manufacturer.
Otherwise, delete the following two paragraphs.
j. Fading resistance: Approximately 0.05 percent,
maximum, after 312 hours of testing in accordance
with ______.

NOTE ** Retain one of the following two paragraphs if
pigmentation of sealer is required for project;

B. Pigmenting Agent: Latex-based paint, specified in

Section 09900.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Verify that substrates to receive sealer-primer are in
accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Protect adjacent surfaces to prevent accidental
application to surfaces not indicated to receive sealer-
primer; remove accidental applications from surfaces
immediately, following manufacturer's instructions.
NOTE ** Delete the following paragraph if no existing
surfaces to be coated in project.
B. Preparation of existing surfaces:
1. Remove loose or deteriorated materials, including,
but not limited to, scale, spalling, paint, or other
coatings.
2. Clean with detergent-based materials, as recommended
by manufacturer's instructions; cleaning with solvent-
based or oil-based cleaners is prohibited.
3.3 APPLICATION
A. Apply sealer-primer in accordance with manufacturer's
instructions for indicated project conditions; for multi-
coat applications, allow specified curing time between
subsequent coats.
B. Addition of materials to sealer-primer is prohibited,
except as recommended by manufacturer.
NOTE ** Delete the following paragraph if specifying
pigmented water repellent application only.
C. Apply non-pigmented sealer-primer to the following
surfaces:
NOTE ** Retain one or more of the following sub-paragraphs,
as applicable to project conditions.
1. New concrete paving.
2. Existing concrete paving.
3. New brick paving.
4. Existing brick paving.
5. New stone paving.
6. Existing stone paving.
7. New foundation walls as primer for subsequent
installation of waterproofing specified in Section
07140.
8. Existing foundation walls as primer for subsequent
installation of waterproofing specified in Section
07140.
9. New vertical cast-in-place concrete surfaces.
10. Existing vertical cast-in-place concrete surfaces.
11. New horizontal cast-in-place concrete surfaces.
12. New horizontal cast-in-place concrete surfaces as
curing compound and sealer.
13. New horizontal cast-in-place concrete surfaces as
single-coat dustproofer.
14. Existing horizontal cast-in-place concrete surfaces
as single-coat dustproofer.
15. Existing horizontal cast-in-place concrete surfaces.
